Sir Gawain
Sir Gawain is the son of Arthur's half-sister Morgause and King Lot of Orkney. His brothers were Agravaine, Gaheris, and Gareth. He was also a half-brother to Mordred.
As Arthur's nephew, he was a very popular and powerful knight. He went on many quests, and features in many stories. He was second in popularity, among readers, to Lancelot.
Some tales say that his strength grew until noon, and then weakened until midnight.
He later comes to hate Lancelot for killing his brothers during the rescue of Queen Guinevere.
More of his life can be found here and here.

The entire text of the story is here. However, simpler retellings can be found here and here
One of the main themes in the story is about honor and chivalry. Sir Gawain, knowing that the Green Knight will most likely kill him, continued to seek him out and fulfill his promise a year after their first meeting. He also proves his honor by not allowing Bertilak's wife to seduce him. A crack in his honor is revealed, however, when he does not relinquish the girdle to Bertilak on the third day, choosing to instead keep it and hopefully save his life.
